Grapevine
(TX) - The Texas Wine and Grape
Growers Association hosted the 2001 Lone Star International Wine Competition at
the Hilton DFW Lakes Conference Center on Saturday, July 28.
Since 1984, the competition has been limited to Texas wineries.
This year the competition expanded nationally and internationally.
A host of sponsors help make the event a wonderful success.
The sponsors included the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau, the
Hilton DFW Lakes Conference Center, the Star Telegram(Tarrant County), Memories
96.7 FM Radio (DFW), Opryland Hotel Texas (Grapevine), the Gatts Group
(Grapevine), and DOT Thermography (Addison, TX).
The Grapevine Wine Pouring Society managed and directed the competition
and logistics. The results were announced at the Texas Wine Tribute Dinner,
Saturday, September 8 during the 15th Annual GrapeFest.
The
competition featured 32 primary wineries from 5 states and 3 countries entering
197 commercial wines. Three panels of judges swirled, sniffed, spit and scored
for most of the day. The judging
panels included: Craig Parker,
Plano, TX; Jose Lopez, Hilton DFW Lakes; Shirley Nelson, Sapello, NM; Monica
Green (Monica’s & CIUDAD), Dallas,TX; John Shirley, Mr G’s, Plano, TX;
Diane Teitelbaum, Dallas,TX; Lewis Dickson, Deguerin & Dickson, Houston, TX;
Russell Kane, Houston,TX; Chesley Sanders, Lone Star Wines, Ft. Worth, TX;
Michael Friend, Red Colemans, Dallas, TX; Dana Schrick, Schrick’s Liquors,
Weatherford, TX; Charles Dalton, Spec’s Liquor, Houston, TX; Chuck Jenkins,

Webb, Hilton DFW Lakes. Following
the competition, a special tasting entitled “You Be the Judge” was held for
the public. Over 300 energetic wine
tasters sampled and voted their choices. A
splendid time was had by all in attendance.
The
competition judges awarded 114 medals of merit:
15 Gold, 25 Silver, and 74 Bronze. The
awards will be presented during the Awards Luncheon, October 20, in conjunction
with the annual meeting and conference of the Texas Wine and Grape Growers
Association, October 19-21 at the Renaissance Dallas North Hotel, Dallas, TX.
The following is a complete list of the results:
